Transboundary Air Pollution

Tail pipe

Air pollution poses a problem on different spatial scales. Dutch air quality is determined by Dutch emissions and by pollutants emitted in foreign countries. In the latter case, pollutants remain in the atmosphere for a long time. They can be transported over large distances and can cause problems far away from the source. The substances examined here are sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and ammonia (NH3), volatile organic compounds, excluding methane (VOCs) and particulate matter.
