Nature Balance 2006: Use and appreciation of nature

The Dutch make more use of nature and the landscape. They value the Dutch landscapes.

Increasing use of nature

The Dutch are making increasing use of nature and the landscape, and are being given more opportunities to do so. Walking and cycling are the most popular activities. Greater use is made of areas with many wildlife habitats, historic features, few buildings and largely unspoilt skylines. Woods and heaths are most popular among walkers. Almost half the population takes part in one form of water sport or another.

Walking and cycling in the country have become more popular in the Netherlands.

Dutch landscapes score an eight

The Dutch value their landscapes. On average they give them an 8 out of 10. People are also concerned about the quality of nature and the landscape in the Netherlands. They especially value landscapes that have retained their characteristic identity, but at the same time think there should be possibilities for new housing and expansion of businesses.
