This report documents the 2009 Netherlands’ annual submission of its greenhouse gas emission inventory in accordance with the guidelines provided by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Kyoto Protocol and the European Union’s Greenhouse Gas Monitoring Mechanism.

Emission trends in the 1990-2007 period

Between 2006 and 2007, total greenhouse gas emissions (excluding Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry, (LULUCF) dropped by about 0.4% (-1.0 Tg CO2 equivalent). CO2 emissions increased by 0.2 Tg. Major contributor to the decrease in greenhouse gas emission is the nitric acid production which decreased by approximately 1.3 Tg N2O in the period 2006-2007.

In 2007, total direct greenhouse gas emissions (excluding emissions from LULUCF) in the Netherlands are estimated at 207.5 Tg CO2 equivalent. This is three percent below the emissions in the base year (213.3 Tg CO2 equivalent).

Figure: charts greenhouse gases (excl. LILULCF) in the Netherlands: emission levels, trends and share of gases, 1990-2007; Between 2006 and 2007, total greenhouse gas emissions (excluding Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry, (LULUCF) dropped by about 0.4%

The report comprises explanations of observed trends in emissions; a description of an assessment of key sources and their uncertainty; documentation of methods, data sources and emission factors applied; and a description of the quality assurance system and the verification activities performed on the data.
