What is the EEA?
The European Environment Agency (EEA) was established in 1993 in Copenhagen by the European Union (EU). The EEA's mission is to deliver timely, targeted, relevant and reliable information to policy makers and the public for the development and implementation op environmental policies in the EU and other EEA member states. Part of these Tasks are performed by five European Topic Centres (ETC's).
What are National Focal Points?
National Focal Points (NFP's) in each country assist the Agency in collecting national environmental information and in diffusion of EEA environmental information. For the Netherlands the NFP is the National Institute of Public Health and the Environment (RIVM). RIVM is cooperating with a number of partners within the Netherlands, the National Reference Centres (NRC's).
What is EIONET?
The European Environment Information and Observation NETwork (EIONET) is the main tool of the EEA to collect data, information and knowledge for the process of reporting on the state of environment. EIONET is both an organisational and a telematic network, using CIRCA software for data communication.
