New Article : Modeling the fate of nitrogen from global point and nonpoint sources

23-12-2003 | News item

In a new publication in Global Biogeochemical Cycles a new component of the IMAGE model is presented: a global model that describes the fate of nitrogen from point and nonpoint sources in the hydrological system up to the river mouths at the 0.5 by 0.5 degree spatial and annual temporal resolution.

The results provide an initial insight into the magnitude of the N losses from point and nonpoint sources in various parts of the world, as well as into the fate of N during transport in groundwater and surface water. Rivers, estuaries and coastal seas with risk to eutrophication are located in all continents, but the highest risks are expected in Asia, Europe and North Africa.
