Greenhouse gas emissions in the Netherlands increased 3% in the last 10 years

News

In 2000, total emissions of greenhouse gases in the Netherlands increased by about 3% relative to 1990. This increase would be a half per cent less when comparing temperature-corrected emissions.

The calculated 3% increase, instead of a 6% increase reported previously, is caused by improved emission monitoring for the base year 1990 and for the most recent years. These are conclusions from the annual National Inventory Report compiled by RIVM for the Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment for submission under the Climate Change Convention of the UN. The report is available online. Also the accompanying spreadsheets files (in the so-called Common Reporting Format) with emissions and activity data are available online. A policy evaluation recently carried out by ECN and RIVM concluded that without policy measures emissions in 2000 would have been about 10% higher. This report (in Dutch) is also available online.
