Ecosystem Services From Concept to Practice

Publication

Ecosystem services have become a popular concept for policymakers and practioners to explain the societal value of ecosystems and biodiversity to the general public. However, in translating the concept into practice, policymakers are struggling as the measurement, valuation and governance of ecosystem services is much more complex than the concept would suggest.

This interdisciplinary textbook guides students, policymakers and practioners from the definition and measurement of ecosystem services through their valuation to applications in terms of policy instruments and governance arrangements. Each chapter discusses key methodological approaches, illustrating their applications at various scales by drawing on case studies from around the world. Presenting a range of perspectives from across many fields, this textbook ultimately considers the crucial question of how ecosystem service delivery can be safeguarded for future generations and what this implies in terms of ecosystem-services-related decision-making and management.
