Recruitment and composition of population of research to be used for the Natural History Study of the PIAMA project

Publication

This report describes the recruitment of participants for the Natural History study of the PIAMA (Prevention and Incidence of Asthma and Mite Allergy) project, a birth cohort study on incidence and risk factors for asthma and inhalation allergy.

With the help of midwives, over 10,000 pregnant women were contacted, allergic women were identified and potential participants for the study were selected. Between June 1996 and July 1997 5,847 of the potential participants were approached by mail and asked to return a written informed consent to join the study for the next 8 years. In September 1997 the study population was complete: 3,291 (response: 56%) pregnant mothers (471 allergic and 2,820 non allergic) had agreed to participate.
