Summary for policymakers of the IPBES assessment on scenarios and models of biodiversity and ecosystem services out now
The Summary for Policymakers (SPM) of the IPBES (Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services) scenarios and modelling assessment was launched on 25 August at the ScenNet conference in Montpellier, France. The methodological assessment provides guidance for the use of scenarios and models to experts performing assessments within IPBES, as well as to other scientists, stakeholders and decision makers.
The SPM was approved by governments at the 4th IPBES Plenary in February 2016.
The assessment focuses on a critical analysis of the state-of-the-art and best practices for using scenarios and models in assessments, policy design and implementation relevant to biodiversity and ecosystem services. It proposes means for addressing gaps in data, knowledge, methods and tools relating to scenarios and models. It, finally, makes a series of recommendations for action by IPBES Member States, stakeholders and the scientific community to implement and encourage these best practices, engage in capacity-building and mobilize indigenous and local knowledge.
The assessment process was supported by a Technical Support Unit set up at PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency. The SPM and an unformatted version of the full report is now available on the IPBES website:
